EMODnet Human Activities, Fisheries, Fishing effort by FAO statistical area and GFCM area
The dataset on fishing effort in the EU waters was created in 2020 by Cogea for the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet). It is updated every year and is available for viewing and download on the EMODnet web portal (Human Activities, https://emodnet.ec.europa.eu/en/human-activities). This dataset is a subset of the data provided by EU Member States in the context of the DCF (Data Collection Framework) data call collecting Fisheries Dependent Information (FDI). The data provided by Member States during the 2025 FDI data call were analyzed by the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) Expert Working Group 25-10. Aggregated STECF data have been related to georeferenced European FAO's fishing statistical areas (27, 34 and 37, at all levels) and to Geographical subareas (GSAs) of the FAO's General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM). Effort data are provided at country level, for this reason confidential data are not shown. When available or not confidential, data on total days a sea, total fishing days, total kW days at sea, total GT days at sea, total kW fishing days, total GT fishing days, hours at sea, kW hours at sea, and GT hours at sea are provided for each FAO fishing statistical area and GSA by year of reference, Country, fishing technology and vessel length classes. With this update the dataset covers now a time series from 2013 to 2024.

STECF data on fishing effort were aggregated by FAO statistical area, at all levels, and by GFCM areas and then related to FAO statistical areas and to GFCM GSASs features in a geodatabase using a one-to-many relationship class. Regions codes have been harmonized. All information is pre-validated by STECF and FAO. Feature classes and tables are related through the F_CODE field (FAO areas) and F_GSA_LIB field (GFCM_GSAs).
